Graphics Cards
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:21:58 pm »
Well ive now got a single machine with nothing installed on it but XP (sp3) and Warrock :D

Its a One of the new pentium dual cores (so a rebadged core 2 duo, with less l2 cache) 1.8ghz

2Gb of Ram and on board graphics.... well thats not going to do. I got the rig for nothing so thought that I would have a look for a cheap graphics card.

I bought a Sapphire ATI Radeon X1650 Pro for £22.00 from ebuyer.com cause im cheap :D bit of a switch for me, life long nvidia fan.

Thought that I would give it a go for warrock, its was a mid/high end card about 12months ago.

On warrock its pumping out 160fps...with no over clock. The ATI drivers, do a test and over clock the card to have a 500mhz memory and cpu clock and the thing kicked up to 190fps on HIGH settings.

Just thinking that if anyone is after a little more grunt then this appears to be a great card for warrock and maybe good on some older fps as well, seems that you can even run crysis on it albeit with all the settings on lowest.

Best 22 beans spent.

click on this link.

http://www.fraps.com/setup.exe

downloads fraps, install and start it up before you run warrock, then it shows the fps in the top left of the screen. Oh just a pointer, what ever you do NEVER EVER overclock a graphics card in a laptop. Bad bad bad news. :D

Whatever you do dont try and record any game play, it records in an uncompressed avi file, so the video output for 1minute is about 500mb. i recorded 1 average game, came in at 22gig.....

See.. all this gayness with fps is pissing me off...
All tests done without changing the gfx settings..
Medium texture
medium effects
medium shadows
high word model
16 bit colour
no lightmap

1024x768

Lobby.......... 160 ish
Ohara...........80
zachar ..........70
Par-east........70
bandar...........60
Conturas........70 ish
Cloud forest...70
Thamugadi.....15 MAX  but usually around the 10 mark...
Engrine..........Same, usually around 10, but never over 15..
any U/O.....80 and upwards

Now, its a pisser, as i quite like the maps, and the only way to play them is in 800x600, with everything on low.. which, is just rubbish to look at, and players start looking like a brown Nintendo Mario instead of soldiers...

i mean, what the hell do those 2 maps have that takes it from a average 60-70 fps ANYWHERE else, down to 15, if im lucky?
Answers on a postcard please...
